Unless you’re familiar with pathfinder 1e or 3.5 dnd, pathfinder 1e can be hard to learn. It’s a lot easier to run pf2, it’s much more balanced, and much easier to learn. I’d suggest running it in 2e, if you’re going to learn either system.

So it seems like basically a way to keep the game a bit less silly if the PCs aren't as interested in a pirate-themed regatta. It's more of a classic adventure and less cartoonish, and gives them opportunities to get what they need by the end of the book ( as well as having one of the best magic items for a bard in the game). P&P skips this and has the PCs help out a local pirate on an island-hopping treasure hunt. Within the story though it makes a name for the PCs and gives them their own ship. Like, what kind of pirates take a few weeks off to just have a race? It's very cartoonish. This can be fun, but it's also pretty silly and whacky. If they win ( which they should) then they get their very own ship. Hopefully someone else will elaborate.īook 2 of S&S has the players get involved in a boat-race against pirates.
